Regardless of how the arrangements shift from studio to stage, Ty's course of action is always to keep things "as raw as possible". "I've really given up on the recreation of the record, unless it's the band performing live in the studio with no overdubs," he explained to us, "I think it's a really good thing to give new life to songs or a different interpretation. When the time comes to take a new record on the road-as he's done this summer, promoting his forthcoming album on long-time label home Drag City, Hello, Hi-Ty's aims are not geared toward replicating the sound developed in the studio. When the psych rocker recently played Chicago's Thalia Hall backed by his Freedom Band, we tagged along and learned about the ins and outs of the gear he's using on tour, including a couple 'secret weapons' that could be deployed at any moment.

A great and memorable gig.Ty Segall has a black belt in fuzz tone, and he's always on the hunt for new, crazy sounds. Furthermore, how people don't dance and move to such intoxicating music is simply beyond me. My only grumble is people living in the world of the simulacram, by endlessly recording a gig on their phone, whilst not being immersed/lost in the music. Amongst the 40-50 gigs I've been to (not that many compared to some, but not bad), I would rank this in the top 5- high praise indeed. I spent the entirety of the next day avoiding conversation and listening again to the entirety of his works. I adore psychedelic music, in fact live for it, and this was amongst some of the most monstrously good psych I've heard at a gig since Wooden Shjips some 5 or 6 years ago. The band was so tight, played with great technique and immersion. A massive shout out to his vocals as well, surprisingly good, especially on 'first taste'. He is so talented and to see him hopping between drums and guitar was awesome. 'First taste' had almost progressive rock/space rock flourishes, whilst Manipulator hammers away with psychedelic goodness.

The myriad influences that infuse his work were at play.
