Demonstrating the value of Slack and getting people on board has been tough though, and I'm worried that moving to a different platform may just have us regress back to emails and word-of-mouth. Really, at this point we may as well move to Discord, literally the only reason is that I never considered it is because it's not 'professional', but on a practical level it would be more suitable. I should have ruled Slack out rather than assuming that the free plan would remain the same, but it was expedient, we're not a tech company, and I simply assumed that there would be a £20-30/month flat-rate package if we ever ended up needing it, I was very wrong! Something that will only get more expensive moving forwards. Moving up to a basic subscription will be priced per user, which means that it becomes very hard to justify paying an ongoing monthly subscription for a whole bunch of people just to read passively to keep them in the loop. However, the new time-based limit will be a problem for longer projects. The 10k message limit was never going to be a problem for us due to the low volume of messages, in about 2 years we've used 1.9K messages. Slack has become a way to keep people in the know, and to have faster, more collaborative conversations than email would offer. As a small business, we've always communicated primarily by small chats between two people which then disseminates, but where we're now a little bigger and have one person mostly working from home, and quite a few people who work odd hours, it sometimes means that some people are out of the loop. Most people don't actually have anything to say, but it just allows them to stay in the loop. We're encouraging people to post general updates and info on there, and set up channels for different areas.

I set up Slack for a particular project for the production team to chat more seamlessly with the designer, it went really well.Īfter a lot of pushing, we've finally got most of the company on board. I work at a small business who have always had a load of trouble with communication.
